What My Master’s Journey Taught Me

Sivmey Chhil, a student in the Master’s Program in Global Innovation Management at NUM International College, Cambodia, is the recipient of an Esomar Foundation scholarship

To me, opportunity rarely arrives in a straight line. Looking back at my master’s journey, I see a chain of small steps, each one made possible by someone who invested in my potential. This is what that chain taught me, and where it leads me to the next.

How my journey began to connect

My journey began with the value of education, which opened doors to university, volunteering, and professional experience. Along the way, opportunities and the encouragement of people around me led me to this master’s program.

Looking back, each step has played a part in shaping where I am today. It reminds me that growth is not always the result of one big achievement, but of the opportunities we embrace, the support we receive, and what we choose to do with what we learn.

The Learning Journey from a diverse cohort

Our cohort came from different backgrounds and brought different strengths. We asked questions, shared ideas, and challenged each other. Not every course was equally exciting, but we kept showing up, and we kept supporting one another.

I learned that strong teams are built on respect, listening, and shared effort. My classmates made this program a place of real growth, and I am proud of what we achieved together.

The Inspiring Learning Journey from professors who have built things

Our lecturers came from many industries, and some travelled to teach us, thanks to the program head’s network. They shared not only their successes but also their mistakes and what they learned from them.

Their message was consistent: success comes from persistence, and from the willingness to keep building through setbacks. That message made me want to create something of my own.

The Tokyo Journey: Learning by doing and daring to take a step forward

During my studies, I joined the Esomar APAC Conference in Tokyo as a YES Student Volunteer. It brought me many of my firsts: my first visa application, my first long-haul flight, my first time working with a Japanese team, and my first time meeting the Esomar community in person.

Three lessons stayed with me:

1.    Preparation matters, but the action matters more

I learned that taking the opportunity taught me more than waiting to feel ready.

 2.    Teams that succeed by responding well:

The Esomar team and our student volunteer from various backgrounds showed me in the matter of uncertainty that what counts is not avoiding mistakes, but how we can learn quickly and how calmly and effectively we can respond to it

 3.    Conversations that open doors

During the conference, I had the privilege of speaking with CEOs and senior leaders from various industries. I learned how great organizations are built, and that behind every one of them are great leaders.

Beyond listening to their stories, I learned from their experiences and guidance. It helps me to reflect a clearer view of how I want to live my life, what I want my life to look like, and what I want to build: something that lasts and could make a positive impact on other people’s lives.

My Message for the next generations

  • Keep going while you still wait for answers

Progress often comes after a period of uncertainty.

  • Learn to say yes to opportunity

Invitations you did not plan for can become the most valuable part of your journey.

  • Learn to invest in your cohort

The people you know today or beside you, later they could be your network for years to come

  • Be grateful to the people who open doors for you

And learn to open doors for others when you can.

What’s next for me

Graduating is just a starting point for me. I believe what we have learned becomes more meaningful when we apply it to real-life challenges and contribute to society. And I hope to continue learning, put my knowledge into practice, and find opportunities to make a positive impact in Cambodia while sharing my experiences with others along the way.

A Grateful Thank You Message

I am sincerely and deeply grateful to Esomar and the Esomar Foundation, Ms. Anna Alu, Prof. Steve Paterson, and all my lecturers for your generous support, your guidance, and your belief in me. I will continue to carry your support and kindness with me, and I hope to pass it on to the next generation in the future.

I would also like to thank all my classmates for our collaboration. You all have made this learning experience more engaging and memorable. I wish everyone well on your journey, and may each of us keep growing, stay true to our purpose, and walk forward with clarity and confidence.
